Hello, December! The holiday season has officially arrived, but before you start decorating your home take a minute to get some insider tips from our interior design partners at Ultimate Builder Services. This year we teamed up with the UBS Design team in Atlanta, GA, to add some holiday cheer to one of our newest Atlanta communities, Vinings Summit.
On November 21, the UBS Design team headed to the Beazer Homes Vinings Summit community to host a Holiday Instagram Takeover giving our social following simple holiday decorating tips to try at home. The UBS Design team really loved all the beautiful details and trim that went into the Laurelwood model home including the large kitchen island, the built-in shelves, and of course the beautiful fireplace that was the focal point to this Holiday Instagram Takeover.

Hi, I’m Melanie Farrell, Interior Designer by day with UBS Designs and a mom to three cuties always! I live in Newnan, GA (near Atlanta) and get to travel with our amazing Ultimate Builder Services team to projects across the country. We specialize in designing beautiful homes that help production builders promote the full potential of new homes in their communities.
Design Tip #1: Choose colors that will accent your current home decor.
Start with a color and style concept. There are SO many options out there it can be overwhelming but the task is much more manageable if you have a specific direction before you get started. The Vinings Summit model home was decorated with rich emerald greens throughout so to compliment the current home decor the UBS design team chose a color palette that included green, gold, and black. Using colors you already have in the design means you only need to enhance the existing style with a few holiday elements. For this Holiday Instagram Takeover, UBS shopped for simple holiday accessories in this color palette to accent and create an elegant holiday theme.
Design Tip #2: Make the most of holiday decor shopping
Start in a store that is going to have the most options that are affordable. Places like At Home, Hobby Lobby, and other craft stores start filling entire sections of their stores before Halloween with every color direction imaginable. You can stock up on the base items like ornaments, garland and even faux trees to create the bulk of the decor that you will need. Then just fill in with more unique finds from smaller stores like Home Goods or local retailers. When possible use LIVE plants like eucalyptus or pine branches to bring a great smell into your home.
Pro Tip: Think outside the holiday section! Make sure to check other areas of the store for items that can be mixed in with your decor and used year round. For example clear vases are great filled with ornaments or greenery and have endless uses the rest of the year.
Design Tip #3: Make use of what you have!
Always work with what you have! Accent your current home decor with accents of holiday trimming. For this Holiday Instagram Takeover, UBS designers were able to use a large vase and a beautiful tray that was already a part of the Laurelwood model home. By adding ornaments and greenery they carried the holiday decor throughout the home. Watch Beazer’s Instagram stories to see how they created beautiful pieces on the built-in shelves and throughout the family room.
Pro Tip: Flipping the ends of holiday ornaments inward so they are not exposed will create a crisp and clean finish to your holiday decor.
Design Tip #4: Dress up the table with a beautiful centerpiece
Simple holiday trim can help transform and create a beautiful tablescape for your holiday gatherings. Don’t be afraid to mix textures and colors to build out a rich and beautiful centerpiece. For this Holiday Instagram Takeover, UBS Designers created a beautiful centerpiece by layering faux pine and eucalyptus, gold foiled leaves, and holiday ornaments. Watch Beazer’s Instagram stories to see how they pieced it together.
Pro Tip: Use wire cutters to trim down any excess greenery so you have enough space to dine with your loved ones.
Design Tip #5: No mantle, no problem!
There are so many ways you can work around a fireplace without a mantle. For this Holiday Instagram Takeover, the UBS design team showed us how much we could do with ribbon. By using wired gold ribbon to withstand the weight of the stockings and then layering with black and gold satin ribbon helped create a unique and simple way to tie in the holiday decor around the fireplace. No hammer and nails needed! This entire set-up is held in place with push pins on each side of the fireplace.
SAFETY TIP: Most holiday decorations are made of flammable materials so be sure to hang stockings at a safe distance away from heat and flames. When in doubt, remove all decor before enjoying your fireplace.
Design Tip #6: Place settings are another fun way to make your home decor festive for the holiday season.
The UBS design team really wanted to do something special with the large kitchen island in the Laurelwood model home. To extend the holiday theme they had in the dining area and family room they chose to dress up table plate settings with napkins folded into the shape of little Christmas trees. The end result was super cute and incorporated the large kitchen island into the holiday theme!
Pro-Tip: If you’re not a professional napkin folder, YouTube it! Yes, even professional interior designers use YouTube. There are so many fun holiday napkin folding videos you can try at home. 😉
